Judo Assessment Checklist

In JUDO, by being able to demonstrate techniques to various levels, one can be promoted to different levels represented by different colored belts.

  1. 7th kyu = white belt = novice
  2. 6th kyu = white belt = beginner
  3. 5th kyu = yellow belt
  4. 4th kyu = orange belt
  5. 3rd kyu = green belt
  6. 2nd kyu = blue belt
  7. 1st kyu = brown belt
  8. 1st dan = black belt

It would be possible, if desired, for us to provide promotion certificates to the campers if we felt that they have achieved the standards for the above levels.

The Standards:

7th kyu

The automatic starting point for all individuals. NO JUDO skills or knowledge.

6th kyu

Some knowledge of what JUDO is about plus the following skills: (Most campers should be able to achieve this level by the end of the camp)

  1. standing rear breakfall = koho ukemi
  2. right standing side breakfall = migi yoko ukemi
  3. left standing side breadfall = hidari yoko ukemi
  4. standing advanced foot sweep = deashi barai
  5. standing outside reaping throw = osoto gari
  6. basic scarf holding technique = hon kesa gatame

5th kyu

Proficiency in the above skills plus the following. (If we achieve this with some of our campers this year, we will have done very well)

  1. right forward rolling breakfall = migi zempo kaiten ukemi
  2. left forward rolling breakfall = hidari zempo kaiten ukemi
  3. back breakfall with roll up = koho ukemi
  4. major hip throw = o goshi
  5. major inner reaping throw = ouchi gari
  6. one arm shoulder throw = ippon seoi nage
  7. hip wheel throw = koshi guruma
  8. modified scarf hold = kuzure kesa gatame
  9. upper forequarter hold = kamishiho gatame
  10. normal cross strangle = name juji jime
  11. cross arm over body armlock = juji gatame

4th kyu

Proficiency in all the above plus several more techniques
